Poor conditions, missing players but Housy still beat Gilbert, 7-0

FALLS VILLAGE — It was a dry hot summer, but area rivers, ponds and soccer fields have had a good soaking in recent weeks. Unfortunately, the rain hasn’t always come when it’s most convenient. Last Wednesday, Oct. 28, it poured and poured on Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys varsity soccer game against The Gilbert School.

The rain started early in the match and turned parts of the field into a muddy, sticky mess.

But head coach Hoot Belter said he wasn’t worried about the impact of the downpour.

“The soccer field holds up pretty well in bad weather, Belter said. “It’s not in the best shape, but it holds up.

And despite the bad weather, the team also held up, slamming  Gilbert for a 7-0 victory.

“Our team has some players that are banged up right now, Belter said. “We’re now incorporating players who haven’t really played much this season, and they’ve all stepped up pretty well. We’re now getting ready for the state tournaments.

Assistant Coach Jim Terrall said the team is trying to finish the season strong.

“I think they played disciplined, controlled soccer, Terrall said. “This victory came about because of the powerful combination of our younger and more experienced players playing smart soccer.
