Post 178 lends helping hand to one of its own

MILLERTON — Two separate benefits at American Legion Post 178 will be held to benefit Legion member Ron Giblin and his family. Giblin, a Vietnam veteran and a single father, recently suffered a stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed.

The local contractor will be out of work for at least six months while he recovers and will not have any income during that time.

"I can’t even imagine what it would be like without a job and without any income whatsoever," event organizer "NASCAR" Dave MacMillan said. "He is a very hard worker and will do anything for anyone. That is why we are all rallying around him. He is just an all-around good guy."

The first benefit will be this Sunday, Aug. 31, at Legion Hall from 7:30 to 11 a.m., when two breakfast chefs from Couples Tower Isle in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, will cook up a full breakfast.

The breakfast includes eggs any style, sausage, bacon, ham, home fries and two native Jamaican breakfast dishes. Also included is a choice of juice, coffee or tea.

"When you see these two chefs cook breakfast you will be amazed," MacMillan said. "I would like to add that I challenge all the fire departments in the area to enjoy this breakfast."

Tickets for the breakfast are $8 and are available at the door.

A few days later on Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. at Legion Hall, the Post will hold a spaghetti fundraising dinner. Tickets will be $10 for the event.

"I think it’s very important that we help fellow veterans in their time of need," Post Commander Lee Garay said. "I think this is very important. What little bit we can do hopefully will help. We are all thinking about him."

For more information on both events or to make a donation to help Ron Giblin, call American Legion Post 178 at 518-789-4755 or organizer Billy Simmons at 518-488-0690.
