Push to revitalize downtown

NORTH CANAAN — Economic Development Commission (EDC) members were encouraged last week by the large turnout at their most recent meeting.

Chairman Terry Dougherty said the crowd of about 50 people who came to Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 18, was heartening because the effort is going to take townwide support.

“The number of business people and others who came out was just what we needed to see. There is such enthusiasm,” Dougherty said. “And the meeting we had at Geer at the beginning of the month was amazing.”

The reference was to a Feb. 2 breakfast that was standing-room-only in the large meeting room at Geer Village. Small business owners, potential merchants and town leaders gathered to hear from representatives of regional planning consultants Goman & York and the Community Economic Development Fund.

The local EDC worked during the past year with Goman & York to determine specific goals. They prioritized a hotel, a walk-in medical clinic and promoting tourism.

“We have a number of things in town already. There’s the theater, Beckley Furnace and the depot,” Dougherty said. “It’s not like we’re starting from nothing. And a study shows up to 12,000 cars go through the center of town every day. That’s a lot of potential for businesses.”

There are already several restaurants in town, and there has been interest from people who want to open a restaurant in Canaan Union Station, Dougherty said.

That space was popular as an eatery for years before an October 2001 fire destroyed part of it. Rebuilding the historic landmark has been a challenge, but the final phase is in sight.

The rebuilding plan includes a railroad museum in the three-story signal tower.

Just down the block, the Colonial Theatre has a new owner and is likely to be a live entertainment venue soon.

“We also need to be part of a regional approach,” Dougherty said. “The state does a lot to promote tourism, and we can really take advantage of those resources.”

Planning consultants have been working on attracting a national hotel chain to open in town. Significant lodging needs have been identified for local businesses, such as Geer, Becton Dickinson and Lime Rock Park.

Dougherty is optimistic that North Canaan can be a treasure people discover, just as he did decades ago with his family.

“We used to come up from New York and we never went farther than Litchfield or the Danbury Fair,” he said. “Then we saw a photo of downtown Canaan in The New Yorker magazine. We eventually found out how great things like the schools are here. It’s part of a whole package that attracts families, and we’re hoping with the housing opportunities we have, more will come.”

The EDC meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public and input is always welcome.

Always on the lookout for new ideas and perspectives, the EDC members will travel to Stamford, Conn., next month for a state-sponsored economic development forum.

Dougherty said they will also look into the status of the streetscape project, which used grant funding for a partial upgrade to infrastructure, including sidewalk pavers, vintage lighting and trees.
