Region One board OKs money for science center

FALLS VILLAGE — Jack Mahoney, representing the  21st Century Fund for Housatonic Valley Regional High School, asked the Region One Board of Education for $30,000 for the Science and Technology Center Building Fund during the board’s regular monthly meeting Monday, Sept. 14.

Mahoney had the unenviable task of following an hour of contentious public comment on Superintendent Patricia Chamberlain’s handling of the Sept. 8 speech to schoolchildren by President Barack Obama.

The money will be used to refurbish the Clark Wood building at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The former agricultural education center is being turned into a building dedicated to the study of science and technology, and will be used by the school’s award-winning robotics and Envirothon teams — as soon as the doors open.

“It’s a three-phase campaign, said Mahoney. “We need to get to $200,000 before we can start work.

Phase I “allows us to open the doors,â€  said Mahoney. Renovation, utilities, a new roof and the code work need to be completed before the space is opened, initially, to the robotics team and students working on the national Envirothon competition.

In August the fund received  $100,000 from an anonymous local donor.

The gift was made in memory of Daniel Scott Parsons, Housatonic class of 1991. The son of Joan of Music Mountain in Falls Village and the late Carl Parsons, Dan lost his life in a car accident on Dec. 30, 1994, at the age of 21. His interest in books and writing is honored through the Daniel Parsons Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a graduating Housatonic senior who will study English in college.

That and subsequent smaller donations brought the fund balance to $142,000.

Board Chairman Judge Manning asked Business Manager Sam Herrick if the $30,000 was available from unexpended funds. Herrick said it was, but cautioned that the final audit was not complete.

And with little ado the board, on a motion from Falls Village representative Gale Toensing, voted to grant Mahoney’s request, contingent on the final audit.

A surprised and delighted Mahoney cut loose with a “Huzzah!

Donations may be sent to the 21st Century Fund, PO Box 132, Falls Village, CT 06031.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
