Salvatore Garzetta

MILLERTON — Salvatore Garzetta, 91, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., residing in Millerton since 2001, died peacefully on March 2, 2010, with his loving family at his side.

Sal was born Dec. 21, 1918, in the Concord neighborhood of Staten Island, one of 10 children of the late Lucia (Sammartino) and Saverio Garzetta. At age 3, his family settled in New Dorp, Staten Island.

On April 20, 1946, in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church he married his beloved wife of 63 years, Kathryn (nee De Felice), who survives at home. In 2001 he and Kathryn moved to Millerton to live with his youngest son, Joseph.

A graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island, Sal enjoyed a career working in the steel industry, initially for Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served proudly in the Pacific Fleet on the carrier USS Bennington. He was involved in the Battle of Midway and the invasion of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of seaman first class.

Returning home, Sal completed a more than 40-year work career, retiring in 1981 as supervisor for Schiavone-Bonomo Steel Corporation of New Jersey.

Upon retirement, Sal enjoyed spending time at home working on his beloved gardens. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his wife and three grandchildren.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, first with the Dalessio Post in Staten Island and then with Millerton Post 178.

In addition to his beloved wife, Kathryn, Sal is survived by three sons, Gary and his wife, Angela, Robert and his wife, Lisa, and Joseph and his wife, Evelyn; and three grandchildren, Gary Michael, Sarah and Dana Garzetta.

 Arrangements are under the care of the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 13, at St. Patrick’s Church in Millerton. A military honor guard will be provided by American Legion Post 178.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
