School years 'flew by fast' for NCES class of 2010

NORTH CANAAN — When thinking about how to describe the character of a class, the words intelligent, talented and athletic often come to mind. The class of 2010 at North Canaan Elementary School is clearly all those things. Energetic should also be thrown into the mix.

Teachers presenting academic awards at the graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 17, didn’t just talk about good grades, but also about an eagerness on the part of students to learn, always coming to class prepared and a willingness to help one another.

Students showcased their talents with musical performances and song and dance solos.

Many students played sports each season, both on school and regional teams. The North Canaan Elementary School boys soccer and basketball teams won the league championships.

The tradition at North Canaan is for students to be the speakers at commencement exercises. Six of the graduating eighth-graders shared their experiences, sorrows and expectations from their years in elementary school.

They had plenty of thanks to offer the teachers who have prepared them for high school, and the parents and family members who have always been there for them.

“I remember last year, being in seventh grade and wishing it was next year. I remember wishing I could use the saying, ‘eighth-grade privilege,’ Trevor Dakers said. “Well, it came too fast. This year went by too fast. But even though it went by so fast, we accomplished a lot together as a class.

Jhessica Arango offered a perspective.

“When we all took our first step in this building, we saw the eighth-graders and thought, ‘Whoa, when will we be that big?’

“Now if you ask most of my fellow eighth-graders they will tell you it doesn’t really feel like we’re the old, big kids that kindergartners look up to.

And more perspective from Ashley Bosio:

“Everyone says that they just want to leave school, but my advice is to enjoy your time here, because everything will change after you leave.

“The school year flies by so fast when you’re having an excellent time at school. We were always laughing and having the times of our lives in sports, lunch, recess and in class.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
