Sean M. O’Connell

AMENIA — Sean M. O’Connell, 54, was tragically shot and killed near his home in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, on April 1, 2011.He was born Oct. 28, 1956, in Bronxville, N.Y., the son of Marion O’Connell of Bronxville and the late Joseph O’Connell.In 2006 he married Lucinda Schutt in St. Thomas, where he resided for the last seven years.Sean received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Virginia. He had more than 30 years of experience in the residential and commercial construction industry, working on a broad range of projects including museums, residential homes, high-end luxury condominiums, senior citizen assisted living facilities, airport runway reconstruction and marine work.Sean was the project manager for the construction of Lions Head condominiums in Salisbury, and co-owner of DeLavergne Properties with William Flood in Amenia.In St. Thomas, he was director of operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands for Kraus-Manning Inc.His projects included Marriott Frenchman’s Cove, Water Island Ferry Dock Reconstruction, Cyril E. King Airport, The Home Depot and many others.Sean was an avid boater, golfer and former member of Lions Club International.In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by his former wife, Sarah (Hardy) O’Connell of Sharon, and their daughter, Cayla; three brothers, Patrick O’Connell and Terence O’Connell, both of Bronxville, and Joseph O’Connell and his wife, Kathy, of Pine Plains; and Joseph’s children, Dr. Cara O’Connell-Edwards and her husband, Dr. Eric Edwards, of Durham, N.C., Megan O’Connell of Quincy, Mass., and Ryan O’Connell of Pine Plains.Donations may be made in honor of Sean’s memory and love of learning to the Annual Fund at the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.Services were held April 9 in Bronxville. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
