Shopping event to raise money for dog therapy foundation

MILLBROOK — Clothing retailer J. McLaughlin will host a holiday shopping event with the Good Dog Foundation Saturday, Dec. 13, from noon to 4 p.m.

The Good Dog Foundation provides therapy dog services for people in need. Founded in Brooklyn in 1998, the foundation has grown in the last 10 years to cover Brooklyn, Manhattan, Fairfield County and the Tri-state Region of New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

“We’ve grown quite a bit,†said Clarissa Gonzales, who handles PR for the foundation: “These are normal, good pets whose owners think they would be good therapy dogs. The dogs are taken to a screening, where they’ll have to pass a temperament test. Then the owner and dog go around to nursing homes and hospitals and other settings where research has shown that having an animal can decrease the stress levels of patients in hospitals, for example. They work especially well in children’s facilities.â€

J. McLaughlin’s event will donate 20 percent of all purchases that day tod the foundation, and executive trainer Susan Fireman will be stopping by from 2 to 4 p.m. to evaluate dogs that owners can bring in. In addition, Good Dog Foundation founder Rachel McPherson will talk about the organization and its program.

“The organization has an active group in the area, and we’re holding this event to benefit their foundation and bring people into the store,†explained J. McLaughin’s co-manager Corrie Galatti.

The Good Dog Foundation is involved with many different programs, including a recent new reading program where dogs go into elementary schools and children can read to them. For information on the foundation, visit thegooddogfoundation.org.

J. McLaughlin is a men’s and women’s clothing boutique on Route 44. For information, call 845-677-6197.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
