Sixteen-year-old girl missing three weeks

WINSTED — A national alert has been issued and a Facebook page has been launched as police continue to investigate the disappearance of Rhiannon Smith, a 16-year-old Winsted girl who has not been seen since Sept. 1.

Winchester Police Chief Robert Scannell said Tuesday that there have been no certain sightings of Rhiannon, though one person reported to police that a girl fitting her description was seen sleeping in a dugout in one of the town’s baseball fields on Willow Street on Sept. 9.

“We’re following up on leads 24 hours a day, Scannell said. “She is still listed nationally as a missing person.

Rhiannon reportedly was last seen at 3 p.m. Sept. 1. Police said she left a note at her home at 402 West Wakefield Blvd. suggesting she may be going to Canada or Prince Edward Island and that an ex-lover was coming from Florida to harm her or her grandparents.

Rhiannon is a white female, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown, shoulder-length hair. She may be carrying a red gym bag and a blanket. Police said Rhiannon does not have a driver’s license or a motor vehicle.

“Numerous individuals who are reported being somehow associated with Ms. Smith have been interviewed, including contacts from Florida and Alabama, said Sgt. Kevin Kinahan in his most recent press release, issued Sept. 12. Kinahan noted that a track of Rhiannon’s cellphone was attempted but no signal was found. A search of her computer also resulted in no leads.

Scannell said Tuesday that police could neither confirm nor deny that Rhiannon is still in Winsted.

A Facebook page launched in early September is titled “Help Find Rhiannon Smith — Missing since 9/1/10 and has featured frequent calls for help. An entry on the page Tuesday said, “It’s been 20 days since Rhiannon has been seen or heard from — 20 days too long! ... Let’s keep looking, and help bring Rhiannon home.

Winchester police are still pursuing the case actively. Anyone with information about Rhiannon or who sees a person matching her description is asked to call the Winchester Police Department at 860-379-2721.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
