Small kitchen fire at Avocado Cafe

MILLERTON — A fire broke out in the Avocado Cafe kitchen Thursday, May 18, resulting in its closure until further notice.

The cause of the fire was later determined to be the result of an employee turning on a valve behind the stove that should have remained off. A total of three employees were at the cafe when the fire took place. None was seriously injured.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, Thompson Plaza owner Ken Thompson heard an employee react to the fire from the second floor, above the cafe. He went downstairs to the cafe to see what he could do.

Initially believing the fire to be a grease fire, Thompson attempted to extinguish the fire using the cafe’s grease fire extinguisher. He then ran upstairs to dial 911 before returning to the cafe for another attempt at stopping the fire, this time using a fire extinguisher that released foam.

Among the fire departments that responded to the fire, the Millerton Fire Department was the first to arrive. It received the call at 8:09 p.m.

“The Millerton Fire Department was just fantastic, second to none in this response,” Thompson said.

The Lakeville Hose Company, the Sharon Fire Department, the Amenia Fire Company and the Copake Fire District also responded.

According to Millerton Fire Chief Jason Watson, the fire was still taking place inside the building when the Millerton Fire Department arrived, though it was extinguished within 10 minutes.

Apart from a small burn that an employee received on her ankle, there were no other injuries. The injured employee was transported to Sharon Hospital for treatment.

With the fire contained to the kitchen area, the extent of the damages included minimal smoke damage as well as some damage to the tile and paint. As a result, the town building department posted a sign that deemed the building unsafe and its use or occupancy prohibited.

At this point in time, Avocado Cafe will be closed so that repairs can be made inside the restaurant. Thompson added that Avocado Cafe is hoping to time its re-opening with the opening party for the novelty store, Imagine That, also in the Thompson Plaza, on Saturday, June 2.
