Smells and tastes of (an Italian) home at Pasta di Casa

AMENIA — Andrea Salvadore has opened Andrea’s Pasta di Casa on the second floor of a newly renovated brick building on Route 343 in Amenia. Salvadore is a well-known cook and caterer in the Tri-state area. In addition to working for many years at Harney & Sons Fine Teas in Millerton, she has also operated a bed-and-breakfast out of her home in Lime Rock. (She also worked for The Millerton News.)She feels that, with this new venture, she has finally found herself at home, not just because she is doing work she loves but also because of the homey atmosphere of her new shop.“There’s something about this building,” she said, watching a pot of simmering meatballs carefully. “It just speaks to you.”Salvadore was invited to open a business in the two-story brick building by her friend Peggy McEnroe, who owns and cooks at the other business in the building, an eatery called Back in the Kitchen. She put together a business plan, consulted with her husband and children, then took the plunge. Andrea’s Pasta di Casa opened last month.Salvadore traces her culinary roots to her grandmother and “wonderful aunts,” who taught her how to make pasta and many of the family’s Italian recipes. Her grandfather and grandmother came from the village of Cassino in Italy — but didn’t wed until after they’d emmigrated to the United States. Eventually, they had eight children and 27 grandchildren. Many of the recipes Salvadore uses are her Nonna Maria’s — which were measured out in quantities that could feed her large family.The design of the shop is also supposed to evoke home-cooked meals, with a plan that has a great-room feel.“This is how I wanted it, all open,” Salvadore explained. “I want people to come in and see what I’m doing.”Andrea’s Pasta di Casa sells homemade fresh pasta for approximately $5 a pound. Since there are no preservatives, they have to be consumed within a day or two of purchase. The ravioli are $12 to $13 a dozen and have fillings that include butternut squash, mushroom and Gorgonzola. There are plenty of sauces and “gravies” (as they are known to many Italian families), ranging from basic marinara to spicy arabiatta to basil pesto, starting at around $10 for containers that hold between 8 and 16 ounces. Custom orders include cannelloni, lasagna, stuffed peppers and more; these dishes must be ordered seven days ahead of time.Andrea’s Pasta di Casa is located on the second floor at 3312 Route 343 in Amenia; the phone number is 845-789-1414. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday and until 7 p.m. on Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday are “production days,” according to Salvadore, when she is supposed to be closed but is cooking in the kitchen, but so far that hasn’t been working out.“Oh, I’ve got people coming in every day of the week,” she said, laughing.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
