Squash and more at Mountainview

FALLS VILLAGE — If you want yellow squash get yourself over to the Mountainview Organic Farm at 309 Route 7 North, because Lara Mittaud Hafner’s got a lot of it at the moment.“Here,” she said, handing some of the gourds to a reporter and photographer. “Take them. Please.”Hafner (with husband Patrick) has just opened a farmstand this month without much fanfare except for Facebook posts and word of mouth. An initial visit was unsuccessful due to a dental emergency, but a return trip a couple days later found Hafner on site. She said, “I just got the gardening bug, so we have to do something with it.”The 18-acre property “has always been a farm,” she added.Mountainview does not use any pesticides, period, and no genetically modified stuff either.Hafner said the corn is hybrid, but not GMO.On hand last week were the squash plus beets and lettuce. Coming up: butternut squash, pumpkins, watermelons and tomatoes.Chances are there won’t be anyone around if you stop by. The stand is run on the honor system.Next year Mountainview plans to have asparagus, eggs, beef, pork and chicken.Someone might swing by thinking about produce and find themselves in a giant tag sale. The barn next to the stand is full of all sorts of odds and ends — hand saws, freestanding mirrors and a marble pedestal (in case you want to put someone on it).The swag belongs to Hafner’s brother, who runs an eBay business.
