Stay healthy by walking

DUTCHESS COUNTY — With the weather getting warmer every day, it’s a great time for me to remind you of the health benefits of walking. It seems so simple, but walking helps you lose weight, lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, relieve stress, improve brain function and even lessen the effects of aging.

For people with heart disease, a daily stroll may be the best activity of all. It boosts circulation without overtaxing you and cuts your risk of a second heart attack in half.

If you’re just starting out, go slowly and walk at no more than a moderate pace. Build up to 30 minutes each day of the week for optimum results. You’ll stick to it longer if you can find a friend to walk with you.

It’s a good idea to carry a cell phone with you if you are going for a walk. Stop and seek medical help immediately should you experience any chest pain, palpitations, unusual fatigue or shortness of breath.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
