Still River Music festival to be on June 24

RIVERTON —  The first Still River Music Festival will be held on Saturday, June 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Riverton Fairgrounds.

The event will include bands and musical acts including Flipper Dave, The Joey Sexton Band, Soul Tsunami, The Kazoo Crew and Murderess Chanteuse.

This is the first time the Riverton Fairgrounds has been used for an outdoor music festival, according to organizer Darcy Abbott.

Abbott is the host of the radio show “The Hot Spot” on Torrington radio station WAPJ.

She is also on the Oxen Committee for the Riverton Fair.

“The fairgrounds is a magical place,” Abbott said. “Organizing has always been in my nature. Last year I was sitting in the oxen pen at the fair and I asked people why nothing else ever goes on at the fairgrounds except for the Riverton Fair? Last year, I approached the town this year to produce the music festival. The town said yes. Normally they don’t use the fairgrounds for anything else, but since I am on the fair committee they trust me.”

The festival is a benefit for non-profit organization AIM For a Better Tomorrow.

According to its website at www.aimforabettertomorrow.com, the organization helps existing public service and nonprofit organizations maintain or expand educational and therapeutic art and musical programming.

“Why a music festival? I’ve been involved in the local music scene for some time now,” Abbott said. “It seems like a natural fit in order to support AIM.”

Tickets to the event are $12 for adults, $6 for children 6 to 12 years old and free to children under 5 years old.
