Students raised $6,000-plus for Jane Lloyd Fund

CORNWALL —  Cornwall Consolidated School students will present a check for $6,052 to Jeff Lloyd for the Jane Lloyd Fund, on Friday, Oct. 30, during an 8:45 a.m. ceremony.

The funds were raised through the school’s annual walk-a-thon, held Oct. 9. Students also walked in honor of school nurse Martha Bruehl, who is battling breast cancer.

The Jane Lloyd Fund offers support to cancer patients and their families with everyday expenses such as rent and food. It was established in honor of Salisbury resident Jane Lloyd, who died of breast cancer. The community offered support to her during her illness.

In the past seven years, students have raised nearly $44,000 through walk-a-thons. Half of the money is donated to a worthy cause selected by the students. The other half is contributed to class accounts to pay for their eighth-grade class trips.

“We are so pleased with the enthusiasm and energy the students put into this year’s event and I know that Martha is very pleased, said walk-a-thon originator Bente Busby. “I hope that the future classes — as I myself retire from organizing this event, due to my last child’s graduation from CCS — will continue this effort with the same or even greater results.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
