Taste of Millbrook hits 10 years

The Millbrook Educational Foundation celebrated more than a decade of giving at its 10th annual Taste of Millbrook on Saturday, June 7.The evening event took place under a tent at Millbrook Vineyards and Winery and featured the vineyard’s wines paired with a spread of foods donated by area restaurants and caterers, served by National Honor Society students. Musical entertainment was provided by the Millbrook High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Craig Fryer (retiring this year) and the MHS Madrigal Singers, under the direction of Alexis Bresnahan. A silent auction (which raised more than $15,000) offered trips, sports and entertainment tickets, spa services, and home improvement items to name but a few, all provided by local businesses and/or residents. The Taste of Millbrook is MEF’s signature fundraising event, held for the past 10 years at the Millbrook Vineyards and Winery. “The Taste of Millbrook is unique not just because of the glorious vistas, delicious food and wine, but because the event unites our community in celebration of MEF and in turn supports our beloved Millbrook Central School District,” said event co-chair Janelle Styles. “Dollars raised directly impact helping enhance the educational experience of our children.”Indeed, MEF was formed in 2001 as a private nonprofit corporation to facilitate charitable donations to the Millbrook Central School District and encourage stronger ties to the community. MEF believes that the use of private funding is essential to its goal of enhancing the quality of public schools. Private funding will provide for program and facility needs beyond those addressed by the regular school funding process. Always looking for new ways to raise money, this year MEF partnered with the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and established an endowment thanks to a very successful December fund drive. Co-chair of the event Jane Williams was thrilled to announce that for two years running the event sold out — this year even before the event. She hopes this will be a reminder for people to buy their tickets early for next year. Williams went on to elaborate on her feelings about the Taste event and MEF in general. “MEF really is making a significant impact on our public schools and even though we’re gathering our resources from one of the smallest districts in Dutchess County,” she said. “Taste of Millbrook continues to grow every year. We’ve got momentum.” Past MEF chair Diane Jackson Schnoor said, “The funds MEF raises have allowed Millbrook Central School District students to experience the power of Shakespeare and world dance, opened the window to the broader world through the purchase of Smartboards and technology and created new opportunities for students to grow as scholars, artists and athletes.”For more information go to www.millbrookeducationalfoundation.org.
