Teen finishes Eagle Scout project

BARKHAMSTED — Tobias Calzarette, 17, completed his Eagle Scout project on Saturday, Feb. 26. As part of his pursuit to obtain Eagle Scout ranking, Tobias, who is a senior at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, built an 8-by-10-foot metal shed at the community garden located on Swanson Road. “The shed went up pretty well,” Tobias said. “I had 24 people help me out to clear out the snow and things went a lot quicker than I thought they would. There was so much snow that had fallen onto the ground that the ground did not really freeze this winter.” Tobias raised money for the project from a bake sale. “I ended up with some money left over, so I purchased a rotor tiller for the shed,” Tobias said. “Plus I got a lawn mower for the garden that was donated.” Tobias said he will find out in April if he will become an Eagle Scout. According to the Boy Scouts of America official website at scouting.org, only about 5 percent of all Scouts ever make Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank a member can attain in the organization.
