Thelma J. ‘T.J.’ Knudslien

NORTH CANAAN — Thelma J. “T.J.” Knudslien, 77, passed on May 18, 2015, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving daughter, son and granddaughters. 

She was born July 15, 1937, in Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Thelma (Lyle) and Martin J. Knudslien.

Thelma worked as a CNA at the Hannah Dustin Health Care Center and the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, both located in Haverhill, Mass. 

Thelma was a “friend of Bill” for 34 years. She was an active member of the Greenwoods Community Church in Ashley Falls, Mass., and sang soprano in the church choir. She was known as TJ to her many local friends. Thelma was a devout Christian and offered unconditional love to everyone and anyone. She also enjoyed birdwatching.

Thelma is survived by her five children, Martin G. Williams of Alton Bay, N.H., David W. Mann of Merrimac, Mass., Johanna M. Distin of North Canaan, Edwin R. Mann of Belmont, N.H., and Mark S. Mann of Torrington; three brothers, Martin Knudslien of Knoxville, Va.,  Donald Knudslien of Heywood, Calif., and John Knudslien of East Weymouth, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren. 

Thelma was predeceased by her sister, Joyce Williams.

A celebration of Thelma’s life was held May 30 in the Greenwoods Community Church in Sheffield. 

Burial followed the celebration at Mountain View Cemetery in North Canaan. 

Memorial donations may be sent to the Thelma J. Knudslien Trust in care of the Canaan Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 815, North Canaan, CT 06018. 

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Joan Anderson Turnure

SALISBURY — Joan Anderson Turnure, 91, died after a long illness on May 3, 2025, at Noble Horizons in Salisbury. She was the loving widow of Michael DeBurbure Turnure.

Joan was born July 29, 1933, in Mexico City, Mexico, the daughter of the late Lawrence Anderson and Barbara (Ryan) Anderson. She grew up in Mexico and Maryland, later attending the Shipley School in Pennsylvania and earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from Vassar College.
