Tough negotiation on insurance rates

FALLS VILLAGE — Members of the health insurance buying group for the Region One school district and area towns met with representatives from Aetna insurance on Monday, March 29. The meeting was part of the ongoing effort to keep the lid on rising insurance costs in the school district and the six member towns (North Canaan, Falls Village, Sharon, Salisbury, Kent and Cornwall).

Region One School District Business Manager Sam Herrick said in an interview Tuesday that the assembled members of the local boards of education, plus some selectmen and finance board members, were favorably impressed by Aetna’s renewal offer, which features an increase of about 5.87 percent over what the district is paying the current provider, Anthem.

Herrick said that Anthem’s latest offer, which is a little under 10 percent, includes the February claims numbers — data that Aetna does not have.

“So it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison yet, Herrick said, adding that it would not be unreasonable to assume that Aetna’s number could go down still further once they see those new numbers.

Herrick said that concerns about disruption of services, should the region switch providers, had been largely allayed by Aetna. He said that at first glance 97 percent of the providers in the Anthem network are also in Aetna’s.

“It was the consensus of the group that Aetna is very much a viable alternative, he said.

Herrick said the next step is for Aetna to meet with the unions next week. A final decision would be made by April 15.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
