Town and village business updates

MILLBROOK — Karen Parrinello appeared in village court on Tuesday evening, July 27, without an attorney. She was arraigned on charges of unlawfully dealing with a child and reckless endangerment and ordered to return to court accompanied by legal counsel.

Parrinello is the parent who allegedly permitted drinking by minors at her home. Five of the teenagers were later involved in a car crash on Sunday, July 11, that resulted in a serious injury to one of the teens.

Michael and Erica Downing are still working on coming up with the money to proceed with the Thorne Building restoration and a lease amendment with the village has not yet been signed. The sticking point remains a guarantee of sufficient financial resources to complete the work.

Where are those wetlands letters? At the public hearing on the town’s proposed wetlands legislation on Friday, July 16, several letters, two from prominent scientists at the Cary Institute, were presented for the record. Town Board member Mike Murphy promised to post the letters on the town website, but so far they haven’t appeared. Robert Schlesinger, president of the Cary Institute, said on Friday, July 30, that he had received a call from the town asking for another copy of his letter.

After the contentious meeting of the town of Washington Comprehensive Plan Committee on Tuesday, June 28, a planned schedule of future meetings was circulated. So far committee meeting number nine and community workshop number three, scheduled for July, have not occurred and there are no meetings announced on the town website through the end of the year.

The youths accused of trespassing at Bennett College and the 17-year-old driver who crashed a car on Sunday, July 11, and left the scene of the afore-mentioned accident talked to Judge Raymond Meier behind closed doors on DA day on Tuesday, July 27. Apparently all will be treated as youthful offenders and the cases will be sealed.

The village of Millbrook has now posted the minutes for 12 village meetings, which occurred during the period between February and June of this year. At the town of Washington website the most recent minutes available are those for the town reorganization meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 4, more than seven months ago.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
