Town meeting July 30 to vote on new school roof

SHARON — A special town meeting is scheduled for Friday, July 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

On the agenda are two items that would allow the town to fund a roof replacment for Sharon Center School.

The first item, if approved, would authorize the town to borrow up to $250,000 from Salisbury Bank and Trust for five years at an interest rate of 2.95 percent to pay for the project.

The second item, if approved, would allow the Board of Education to spend $58,000 from its Capitol Nonrecurring Account for the work.

In a previous interview, in March, Principal Karen Manning said it is beyond time for the roof to be replaced.

“The roof on the school building is the top priority, she said. “It needs to be replaced. There is some leaking. The time has come.

Manning said the roof has been on the school building since 1992.

It was not hit by the large tree that fell within inches of the building during last week’s storm.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
