Town Supervisor finds roots in France

AMENIA — Amenia town Supervisor Wayne Euvrard took an unusual vacation over the holidays, traveling to France to visit his cousin and the small town from which his great-grandparents immigrated.

The Euvrards came to Sharon, Conn., from the small French commune of Héricourt, which as of a 2006 census had a population count of 103. The supervisor’s cousin retired in France, and Wayne stayed with him for two weeks.

A proclamation was drawn up by Town Board members before the supervisor left, and Euvrard, with the help of a translator, met with Jean-Michel Villaume, Maire de Héricourt, who presented the visiting American with a small medal commemorating his visit.

The most surprising part of Euvrard’s visit?

“It looked just like Dutchess County and Sharon! Euvrard said. “The rolling hills, the limestone quarries. My great-grandpa must have stood at the top of a hill in Sharon and said ‘This is like home!’ It was amazing.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
