Trains, bridges and scrap metal at BOS

NORTH CANAAN — The Board of Selectmen met on Tuesday, July 5, to discuss town business and projects.

The board addressed the issue of how to charge for the bulky waste and scrap metal that the transfer station has been receiving from residents. After a brief discussion it was decided that the charge for dropping off scrap metal would be set at market price.

It was also announced that brush pick-up will be suspended until late September, unless a violent storm makes the service necessary at an earlier date.

North Canaan resident Christian Allyn was called upon to speak briefly about his work removing barberry and poison ivy around an area that is to become a disc golf course in the near future. No date has yet been set for the course’s opening.

The selectmen announced that a transportation guide for seniors and those with limited mobility living in the Northwest Corner has been compiled and is now available to the public. In addition to the transportation guide, the board also received a letter from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stating that the town must have emergency ambulance operation plans drawn up. A consultant is already at work putting those together.

The board was also given a reminder that the Hartford Veterans Day parade will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6. All veterans and active military members are welcome to participate, as are marching bands. The parade is expected to be the largest of its kind in New England. A bid of $2.97 million by Lawrence Burnoli Inc. of Farmington, Conn., was accepted for updates to the railroad tracks and Main Street crossing near the depot. Work may begin in as little as two weeks, pending state approval.

The Tectonic Builders company has been selected to make repairs and updates to the Sodom Road Bridge. A public meeting was held at Town Hall at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, to review the bridge’s condition and construction history, and to discuss how best to proceed.
