A tremendous improvement!

This week’s record, 11-3; for season, 58-46

Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 4-3

I was beginning to wonder if I would ever see double digits in the wins column again. I’m not, however, going to chirp too much because I know better. Things can turn around in a hurry when it comes to picking these games.

I’m not exactly thrilled with my Pick of the Week, but the Ravens did win in overtime against the lowly Bills. I must admit that getting the exact score of the Packer/Vikings game (28-24) is a real stroke of luck, but it does happen every now and then.

There are plenty of good matchups every week, and this week has some great games on tap. Here’s how I see them playing out:

Sunday, Oct. 31

Miami at Cincinnati — The tough-luck Dolphins got robbed against the Steelers, but I’m not giving up on them. The Bengals remain mired in inconsistency and that should spell doom. I’ll take the Dolphins, 24-20.

Jacksonville at Dallas — It’s becoming harder and harder to understand the faith the owner Jerry Jones has in his head coach, Wade Phillips. The Cowboys need help and it may come in the form of the Jags. I’ll give the Boys one more chance at a win, 23-17.

Washington at Detroit — The Redskins continue to impress even on the road, but I smell something fishy in this game. I’ll go with a hunch here and take the Lions, 19-13.

Buffalo at Kansas City — The Bills put quite a scare into the Ravens, but I don’t see them having much luck against a red-hot Kansas City team. I’ll take the Chiefs, 28-20.

Green Bay at N.Y. Jets — The Packers picked up a big win against the Vikings, but I don’t think they’ll fare as well when they visit New York. The Jets continue to roll with a 24-20 victory.

Carolina at St. Louis — The Panthers finally won a game, but I’m not looking for any kind of winning streak out of them. I’ll stick with the Rams, 27-16.

Denver at San Francisco — This could be the first “you might as well do yard work game of the year. Neither team is going anywhere, so I’ll stick with the home-standing 49ers, 20-13.

Tennessee at San Diego — This is a must game for the Chargers, and I think they showed signs of waking up against the Patriots. Tennessee, however, is tough. In the end, I think San Diego rights the ship and wins this one, 33-27.

Minnesota at New England — I don’t see the Vikings going anywhere with or without Brett Favre. As for the Patriots, they just keep on winning. I’ll stick with New England, 24-16.

Seattle at Oakland — This game is interesting because both teams are playing well. The Sea-hawks are doing just fine under Pete Carroll, but for some reason I think the Raiders are ready to go on a roll. I’ll stick with Oakland, 23-19.

Tampa Bay at Arizona — The Bucs have been good to me so far this season so I’m giving them the nod. I’ll take Tampa Bay, 20-13.

Pittsburgh at New Orleans — The Steelers are very fortunate to have won last week against the Dolphins, while the Saints lost for the second week in a row at home. Don’t be surprised to see Drew Brees come up with a big game for the Saints, but I’ll stick with my Steelers, 27-24

Monday, Nov. 1

Houston at Indianapolis — I know Houston won the first encounter but they have been rather shaky as of late. The Colts defense will come alive in this one, and that’s why I’m making Indianapolis my Pick of the Week, 23-17.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
