A Tribute to Piazzolla

Dawn Upshaw, one of the world’s great sopranos, will appear at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 8 p.m., accompanied by pianist Gilbert Kalish.    Also, longtime festival residents, the Tokyo String Quartet, will play Haydn, Berg, and the first of Beethoven’s middle-period Razumovsky quartets on Friday, Aug. 7, also at 8 p.m. 860-542-3000 or ww.norfolkmusic.org

   At Music Mountain this weekend there’s a tribute to the great Argentine re-inventor of tango, Astor Piazzolla, with concerts by Cuarteto Latinoamericano and Bandoneon master Daniel Binelli, both Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.musicmountain.org, at the door, or call 860-824-7126.

   An exciting summer music festival is scheduled for the Berkshires from July 31 to August 2 as the Bella Terra Music Festival presents live music, art and culture for three days in Great Barrington, MA. The event will feature two stages of live bands and DJs, puppet shows, live painting, art installations, shadow dancing, poetry readings, and much more. It’s all a benefit for Berkshire Arts Scholarships (BARTS), a scholarship program administered by the Railroad Street Youth Project in Great Barrington. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
