75 years ago — November 1936
SALISBURY — E.E. Stalker is confined to his home with a severe cold.

Reflections of the Season (editorial): The pioneer days had their good features. All the people had to fear in those days was an attack by Indians, and now its politicians and hordes of them, and no one is allowed to shoot ‘em.

TACONIC — Mr. and Mrs. Walter Frink and daughter Nettie and grandson Lorin Jr., with H. Garrison of Sharon, motored to Goshen on Sunday. Walter Frink Jr., who has been employed there, returned with them and entered the employ of E.G. Woodward at Grassland Farm.

Among the recent highway department awards is that of 20,770 feet of bituminous macadam in the town of Sharon on Route 4. The contract is awarded to the Suzio Construction Co. of Meriden.

50 years ago — November 1961
Area residents were dismayed to awake Monday morning and find a thick, wet snowstorm in progress. After the warm Fall, and no warning from the weatherman, motorists were caught without snow tires or chains and a spate of automobile accidents occurred.

Mrs. Pearl Goodsell has bought a house on the corner of Bragg and Prospect streets in Canaan and will be moving in when alterations are completed, probably about Dec. 1. Mrs. Goodsell, who has lived in Sharon for almost 20 years, 18 of which she was a teacher at Sharon Center School, said that she regretted moving away from Sharon but had been unable to find a house in Sharon to meet her specifications.

Russell J. Shaw, president of the National Iron Bank in Falls Village, has announced that Mrs. William Boults is a prize winner in the nation-wide Bankers Aweigh Contest sponsored by American Express Co. The award, a Corning Ware Family Set, was presented to her at the bank by Mr. Shaw.

25 years ago — November 1986
SHARON — When Doug Hobby arrived at his auto repair shop on Saturday, he found 28 cars, trucks and trailers with flat tires on his lot. There apparently was no pattern or motive for the slashing of more than a hundred tires in Sharon late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
