100 years ago — June 1919

SALISBURY — Howard Select, pitching for the Yale Varsity nine against Fordham, Decoration Day! held his opponents to three hits in ten innings.

 

The Salisbury Association has again engaged F.F. Miller of Hudson to bring his power sprayer here for use about the middle of this month. Arsenate of lead treatment will be given to elms chiefly. The Association pays for spraying several hundred highway trees, and now offers this service, as in other seasons to individuals, in and near Salisbury and Lakeville villages, who wish to have work done at their own expense. Spraying in other sections of the town subject to special arrangement with us. The spraying charge for medium sized and large trees is 75 cents each. Very small trees bunch to meet same rate.

 

TACONIC — Fred Rebillard arrived at his home Thursday being discharged from service since his return from overseas. He was in an army hospital while abroad for about four months, once by being gassed and later by injury to his back.

 

The heavens glowed red for hours Sunday night and many folks thought it was the reflection of a fire when in reality we were being treated to an exhibition of nature’s most spectacular phenomena — the aurora borealis, the northern lights.

 

LAKEVILLE — Wesley Welch, Ethel, George and Howard Hart, Myrtle Allen and Fay Jones all underwent operations for adenoids and tonsils at Pittsfield the early part of the week.

 

50 years ago — June 1969

Barred from the Indianapolis 500-mile race because of his youth, Sam Posey of Sharon came home to Connecticut to win Lime Rock Park’s Trans-American Sedan Championship on Memorial Day. It turned out to be a fine climax to a hectic birthday week (Posey was 25 on May 28) as he kept his Ford Motor Company Mustang entry out in front from the 18th lap through the final 75th lap over the 1 1/2 mile road racing course at Lime Rock.

 

The 14-member Yale Whiffenpoofs traveled to Lakeville Sunday to present a special musical program at a joint birthday party attended by 50 people to honor Mrs. Polly Fitting, Mrs. Herman Staber and Miss Sue Parsons.

KENT — Monica Maggi of Kent was one of three Hartwick College students who designed their own third-world teaching experience in Jamaica during the school’s January term.

BRISTOL — The Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team ended the season with a 34-0 shutout victory over St. Paul Catholic High School Wednesday, Nov. 26.

It was GNH’s fourth consecutive Turkey Bowl win against St. Paul and the final game for 19 GNH seniors.

Students curate Katro Storm portraits at HVRHS

“Once Upon a Time in America” features ten portraits by artist Katro Storm.

The Kearcher-Monsell Gallery at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village is once again host to a wonderful student-curated exhibition. “Once Upon a Time in America,” ten portraits by New Haven artist Katro Storm, opened on Nov. 20 and will run through the end of the year.

“This is our first show of the year,” said senior student Alex Wilbur, the current head intern who oversees the student-run gallery. “I inherited the position last year from Elinor Wolgemuth. It’s been really amazing to take charge and see this through.”

Mini horses, big impact: animal learning center opens in Sheffield

Le Petit Ranch offers animal-assisted therapy and learning programs for children and seniors in Sheffield.

Le Petit Ranch, a nonprofit offering animal-assisted therapy and learning programs, opened in April at 147 Bears Den Road in Sheffield. Founded by Marjorie Borreda, the center provides programs for children, families and seniors using miniature horses, rescued greyhounds, guinea pigs and chickens.

Borreda, who moved to Sheffield with her husband, Mitch Moulton, and their two children to be closer to his family, has transformed her longtime love of animals into her career. She completed certifications in animal-assisted therapy and coaching in 2023, along with coursework in psychiatry, psychology, literacy and veterinary skills.
