This used to be a familiar sight but it appears that most of the greens now come from market gardens and are sold through the stores. Another of our cherished institutions seems to be disappearing. Vitamins may be had in spinach, but give us the hardy dandelion for the real thing in greens.50 years ago — April 1961LAKEVILLE — In the bright warm sun of last Sunday, Miss Jeanette Axelby was seen in a bathing suit, canoeing among the ice floes on Lake Wononscopomuc. On Monday in the snowstorm, Frank Markey was spotted out on the lake in a motorboat breaking up ice with an oar.Miss Petie Robinson, daughter of Mrs. Orpha Brown Robinson, made her debut as an exhibitor at the Newtown Dog Show last Thursday. Her dog, a Golden Retriever, won best of breed at the Match Show.SHARON — Donald Lamb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lamb, and Miss Cathy Riley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Riley, celebrated their second birthdays with a party with 14 children attending at the home of Mrs. Lamb on Thursday afternoon.25 years ago — April 1986SALISBURY — The tall spruce known to many as Salisbury’s lighted Christmas tree, was cut down last Thursday, said to have been a victim of age and decay. Residents were unprepared for its demise and lamented its sudden end. The century-old Norway Spruce that Walter Angus transplanted to the green in front of the White Hart Inn from an unknown site had been in failing health for several years.Taken from decades-old Lake-ville Journals, these items contain original spellings and phrases.
