SALISBURY — Charles R. Nash is home for a few days before leaving for Lone Pine Camp, Paul Smiths, N.Y.

TACONIC — The Twin Lakes Post Office opened on Monday for the summer season. Miss Nellie Kelsey will be in charge as in former years.

SALISBURY — Moore & Moore have rented the J. Cox Howell place on the Lime Rock road to Mrs. Rebecca Riggs, mother of Headmaster Riggs of Indian Mountain School for the season.

50 years ago — June 1961
CANAAN — A Requiem Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Joseph’s Church for Mrs. Clare (Trier) Grannan of North Canaan, who died June 14 at Fairview Hospital, Great Barrington, after a short illness. Mrs. Grannan was born in Hurley, Wis., Oct. 12, 1902, the daughter of Mrs. Luella (Reible) Trier and the late Frank Trier. She was the widow of Walter R. Grannan.
Editor and Publisher of the Connecticut Western News in North Canaan at the time of her death, Mrs. Grannan had been active in newspaper work for most of her adult life.

SHARON — Miss Jessica Boyden from New York is spending her vacation with her mother, Mrs. Walter M. Boyden.

CORNWALL — Robert C. Blake attended the 20th reunion of his class at Princeton University last week.

25 years ago — June 1986
Two investigators from the Department of Motor Vehicles continued to work Wednesday on assembling a report on the fatal crash that occurred Saturday during an auto race at Lime Rock Park in Salisbury. A 58-year-old race car driver, Joseph G. Dodge of Orangeburg, N.Y., died as the result of injuries sustained when his Pontiac Fiero careened out of control and was struck broadside by a Triumph TR8.

The painting crews have finished their work and the restored Amesville Bridge is finally completely renovated. It has been almost two years since the Department of Transportation first announced that the span was unsafe for vehicular traffic and closed it.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
