75 years ago — August 1936
ORE HILL — Messrs. Roland and Robert Fenn of Millerton were guests of Morris Dennis last Thursday. While fishing Roland captured a six pound bass. Richard Solan is working hard with his new casting rod to catch the mate to Fenn’s bass.

LAKEVILLE — Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Doyle have severed their connection with the chain store which they have been managing the past year. They have not announced their future plans.

Mrs. A.K. Odell of Belgo Road is on a southern cruise, and will return in September.

LAKEVILLE — A valuable saddle horse belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wolf has been in a critical condition owing to an attack of tetanus, but is now thought to be recovering.

50 years ago — August 1961
SHARON — The four-story, decaying “Charles Adams” house which overlooked the Community Beach on Silver Lake, the house known to many as The Manor, was burned down by the Sharon Fire Department on Sunday morning.

SALISBURY — Lila Baroody reports that her chinchilla rabbit, Cottontail, gave birth to 14 babies yesterday morning, a phenomenally large number even for a rabbit.

CANAAN — In an election last Friday at Canaan Products Co., the United Mine Workers Union was defeated in an attempt to unionize the plant’s 80 production workers.

25 years ago — August 1986
FALLS VILLAGE — New Kellogg School teacher Eileen Gargon joined with music teacher Barbara Collins last Wednesday to help paint a room at the school. Also at work that day were Robin Faust and Principal Diane Marino. The teachers were helping to prepare the school for its September opening after two painting contractors backed out of their contracts.

CANAAN — Canaan firemen were feeling like “10-year-old kids” last week with the return of old No. 4 to their possession. The 1930 Reo pumper had been in the hands of a private owner for nearly two decades.

LITCHFIELD — Housatonic Valley Regional High School varsity baseball dropped a 3-0 decision to Wamogo Regional High School Wednesday, May 1.

The Warriors kept errors to a minimum and held the Mountaineers scoreless through seven innings. HVRHS freshman pitcher Chris Race started the game strong with no hits through the first three innings, but hiccups in the fourth gave Wamogo a lead that could not be caught.

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.

Four Brothers ready for summer season

The month-long process of unwrapping and preparing the various features at the Four Brothers Drive-In is nearing completion, and the imaginative recreational destination will be ready to open for the season on Friday, May 10.

The drive-in theater is already open, as is the Snack Shack, and the rest of the recreational features are activating one by one, soon to be offering maximum fun for the whole family.
