75 years ago — November 1935

SALISBURY — Richard Scott is laid up with an injured knee.

SALISBURY — W.H. Judd was quite severely bruised and jarred last Sunday. He was on the roof of his porch putting on some storm windows, when a sudden gust of a high wind caught him off balance and caused him to fall to the ground. While badly shaken up no permanent injury was sustained.

50 years ago — November 1960

Fire from some unidentified source started Wednesday when the owner of the River Inn, Route 7, Cornwall Bridge, was out for an hour between 11 a.m. and noon. When Felix Masante returned he found the bar section ablaze. Both Kent and Cornwall Fire Departments fought the fire and were able to keep it from demolishing the entire building. Water and smoke damage, however, was heavy throughout the whole inn.

FALLS VILLAGE — The bulldozers have been chugging through underbrush in a clearing operation at the Falls Village Recreation Area. With most of the work contributed by volunteers, this is a true community enterprise.

SHARON — Dora Duplessis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duplessis, celebrated her seventh birthday last Friday afternoon with a party for a small number of her second-grade girl friends at her home.

25 years ago — November 1985

FALLS VILLAGE — Townspeople at Monday night’s town meeting voted 44-35 to abandon an unimproved section of Dublin Road. The decision came after a lengthy question and answer session in which residents along the road voiced their concerns. Abandoning the road will enable Northeast Utilities to widen a canal under the Dublin Road bridge as part of a $9 million plan to improve its plant.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
