100 years ago — 1909

SALISBURY — E.R. LaPlace, wife and daughter have been calling on friends. He was formerly a druggist here.

The Observer (editorial): North Canaan remains in the wet column for another year, and South Canaan goes dry. The vote in both places was very evenly divided, and if there are any in either town who did not vote, they probably feel like kicking themselves.

CHAPINVILLE — D. Hatmaker has purchased a large drove of cattle from parties at Housatonic.

CANAAN — The condition of Harmon Schamerhorn, who fell from a tree while picking apples a few days ago, is slowly improving.

SALISBURY — Louis Goderis has moved into the house he recently purchased. Mrs. Hamm, who has been occupying the house, has been unable to find a residence as yet.

CHAPINVILLE — J.F. Fisher has a new pair of oxen.

CANAAN — Rufus Whitford has leased to John Bianchi the first floor of the old knitting mill for a term of five years to be used as a poolroom and restaurant.

50 years ago — 1959

SALISBURY — Mrs. Ero Brazee won second prize for her miniature garden in the adult class at the Riverton Fair last weekend and Sandra Stanton won a second in the children’s class of miniature gardens. Mrs. William Stanton won a first in the art exhibit for her pen and ink sketch of birds done on black paper with white ink.

Lakeville will soon have its own bake shop. The Millerton Pastry Shop is planning to open a branch in the small shop next to Dufour’s Garage. Now people who have been trekking to Millerton for Bradley Hosier’s fresh baked buns, doughnuts, cookies, seeded rye and raisin loaves will be able to find them close to home.

TACONIC — Mr. and Mrs. R. Brangage have closed their cottage for the winter months.

CORNWALL — Cornwall firemen burned the old Bennett house on Bennett Place Road on Sunday morning at the request of the owner, Miss Virginia Smith. The barn adjoining was also burned. The house has not been fit for habitation for several years. The last people who made a home there were the Albert Baileys.

SHARON — Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Whitney entertained the teachers of Sharon Center School at their home on Monday evening.

25 years ago — 1984

SHARON — After her Easter lily bloomed last spring, Nancy Selino stuck it in her garden and forgot about it. The leaves kept growing, so this fall she watered it daily with tepid water. The result — a reblooming lily in October.

FALLS VILLAGE — A son, Sean Patrick, was born to Daniel and Flora Murphy on September 20.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
