Two Farms Market is fresh

WINSTED — Two Farms Market has opened in Winsted on Main Street, in a building that was most recently a barber shop.

The store is co-owned and operated by the owners of Barden Farm and MarWin Farm, both of which are in New Hartford.

Anita Barden said her farm was started by her family in 1927. MarWin Farm was started in 2006 by the Dahill family.

“We had been talking about opening up a store together for quite some time,” Barden said. “Then Ken Dahill came across this location when he was eating at Foxtail Fine Catering and Cafe next door.”

Barden said that everything offered at the store will be locally grown or made at the two farms.

“We will be offering a wide variety of produce, baked goods, canned goods, poultry and vegetables,” she said. “We will sell all vegetables in season and some vegetables that are grown in a greenhouse that will be out of season. Everything is pretty much grown on our farm but we do buy in locally grown strawberries and blueberries.

“Ken raises ducks, chickens, pork and mushrooms.”

Barden said that both farms have kitchens and they will bring in fresh-baked pies and other baked goods for sale, along with pickles, jellies and jams.

“Our food is as fresh as it can get,” Barden said.

“It’s really important for consumers to get to know their farmers,” Barden’s daughter, Cara Donovan, added. “When they come in here, they will have the opportunity to talk with someone who is directly involved with the production of their food.

“It’s good to know where your food comes from and how it came to be.”

Shoppers do seem eager to stop in, say hello and hear about what they’re buying.

“People in Winsted have been super friendly,” Barden said. “They have been very welcoming and kind. I’m looking forward to becoming part of the community.”

Two Farms Market is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information call 860-379-8803.
