Upgrades (still) being planned for Route 44/41

SALISBURY — The selectmen voted Jan. 5 to authorize First Selectman Curtis Rand to apply for a state transportation grant for the intersection of routes 41 and 44 in Lakeville.A plan to upgrade the intersection has been around for years. He blamed the state Department of Transportation (DOT) for delaying the process. The last time Rand met with DOT officials, he recalled, he asked why it had taken seven years to achieve even minimal progress. “They told me that seven years isn’t so bad. They’ve got one that’s been there for 19 years.”The discussion of Route 44 in Lakeville included concerns about a narrow parking lane making it difficult for motorists “to pull over spontaneously to shop,”according to Selectman Mark Lauretano. The $400,000 transportation grant would be an 80-20 split between the state and the town.Notes: The regular meeting time for the Board of Selectmen will now be the first Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
