Village plan to be presented, again

MILLERTON — A number of months ago the county’s planning department presented its plans to revitalize the village of Millerton.

John Clarke, senior planner with the county, made the presentation to a large crowd at The Moviehouse. But not all of the Village Board could be present at that meeting. This past Monday, the question was raised whether the board wants Clarke to make the presentation again, this time at Village Hall.

“It’s been presented, said village Trustee Anne Veteran. “Since you didn’t all get to see the presentation, do you want John Clarke to come? We need to either drop it or adopt it. We need to make a move.

Although the county submitted the design plans, the local community group Townscape worked as a liaison. In fact, Townscape had told the Village Board that it would make a presentation to the board once the plans were ready, but that never happened.

“The motion was that they were to come back and present it to the trustees, said Trustee Jack Thomas. “They did not fulfill their obligation. I want that presented to this board.

“I strongly feel it would be a solid waste of time. Ninety percent of this is on private property. It’s so draft, so conceptual, said Mayor John Scutieri. “The presentation, one’s liable to say it looks great or it doesn’t look great, but ...do we need someone from county planning telling us how to do it?

“The fact is, whether you love it or you hate it, you’re going to be dead before it’s done, Veteran said. “I don’t like 90 percent of it. It’s an abstract, it’s a concept. Things on that plan aren’t going to get done because there isn’t enough money. But there are pieces that can get done. Each thing would be a section.

“I definitely have a problem that it was only presented down there, said Trustee Marty Markonic, who said he couldn’t make it to the original presentation. “I feel like I missed out on the boat. All I get is all the people who went and present the negative. It could be the best thing in the world for Millerton, but I don’t know.

The mayor decided that the board should indeed invite Clarke to come and make his presentation at a workshop meeting so that everyone can have a chance of viewing it. No date has been set for the meeting.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
