Voters came out — even though there were no contests

FALLS VILLAGE — There were no surprises in Tuesday’s uncontested municipal elections in the town of Canaan/Falls Village. Pat Mechare returns as first selectman, with Chuck Lewis and Peter Lawson as selectmen.

Turnout was light; not surprising considering that all candidates were guaranteed a seat. Town Clerk Mary Palmer was the overall top vote getter, with 131 votes.

Mechare earned 102 votes; Lewis and Lawson had 78 and 58, respectively.

For this election, the town had a total of 733 registered voters — 250 Democrats, 206 Republicans, 275 unaffiliated and two registered with other parties.

Palmer was busy Wednesday morning swearing people in. “I’ll call them up and track them down if I have to, she said.

In Falls Village, candidates take office immediately, with the exception of the town clerk, whose job begins in January.

The KenMont and KenWood summer camp and the town’s Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission are close to reaching a mutually acceptable agreement.

The conflict began after the IWWC denied the camp’s retroactive application in March 2024 for the road and dock, which were constructed without town approval sometime last decade. The Commission found both structures violated town regulations, leading the camp to file a legal appeal.
