Webutuck girls varsity soccer team earns two more wins

On Friday, Oct. 21, the Webutuck girls varsity soccer team secured its ninth win of the season for an overall record of 9-3-2.“That’s probably one of the best records we’ve had in a while,” coach Mark Moren said.The girls faced the Stissing Mountain team during a night game. The final score was 3-1.Pine Plains was in the lead at halftime with 1-0, but Webutuck came back strong in the second half.Danielle Stoetzner made the first Webutuck goal with an assist by Victoria Cullinan, who then made the second Webutuck goal off a corner kick. Rileigh Campion made the third Webutuck goal with an assist by Stoetzner.The day before, on Thursday, Oct. 20, the team went up against Rhinebeck for a 2-0 win in the last division game of the season.Cullinan made the first goal of the game off a corner kick. Campion made the second goal with and assist by Briana Bailey.“We really out-shot the other team,” said Moren, noting that his team had 22 shots on goal versus Rhinebeck’s two.The game marked the eighth shutout of the season for goalie Leslie Robertson.The team ended with a 5-3-2 league record and a 4-1-1 divisional record.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
