Will snow delay regional b-ball championship?

The boys basketball teams from North Canaan Elementary School and Sharon Center School are set to meet in the final round of the Region One championship tournament. Scheduling the game has been problematic.

The girls played Feb. 4 — with Cornwall victorious over Kent (see story, page A6)— on a day when the gym at Housatonic Valley Regional High School had limited availability.

The boys are now supposed to play at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Housatonic.

However, a snowstorm, predicted at press time, was expected to cause the cancellation of school Feb. 10. The regional band and chorus concert was scheduled for Feb. 10 and, as of press time, it was expected to be moved to Feb. 11 in case of snow on Feb. 10, creating a conflict with the basketball game.

If that turned out to be the case, the game would be rescheduled to Feb. 17 or 18, accommodating the five-day  holiday weekend and allowing the boys to have at least one practice day.

Anyone who followed all that is obviously hoping to be able to cheer the boys on. Regional Athletic Coordinator Bob Vaughan (principal of Cornwall Consolidated School) advised that fans should not rely on the Region One Web site for information, as it is not always updated. Instead, check the elementary school Web sites or call the schools for the latest scheduling information.

Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
