William Warren Bartlett

SALISBURY — William Warren Bartlett, 75, died suddenly on March 25, 2011, at his home in Chappaqua, N.Y. His wife, Francoise, passed away on March 7, 2011. They married in 1960, lived most of their lives in Chappaqua and spent summers at their family camp on Mount Riga in Salisbury. Bill was born on March 14, 1936, the son of Kathryn (Clark) and Lewis Hall Bartlett. His mother was a daughter of Raymond Clark, a physician practicing in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a longtime Mount Riga summer resident. Bill graduated from the Salisbury School, Columbia College, and the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. He had a long and distinguished career on Wall Street, starting at Citibank and Commercial Credit Corporation. He went on to First Boston Corporation, Dillon Read and Lehman Brothers, where he was senior vice president. He retired in 1998 as a senior vice president at Salomon Smith Barney. An authority on mortgage-backed securities, he was an advisor to Freddie Mac and wrote a highly regarded monthly research publication, the Executive Mortgage Report. He published articles on mortgage-backed securities in several financial journals, and published two editions of his authoritative book entitled “Mortgage Backed Securities.” He was senior instructor in mortgage-backed securities for the New York Institute of Finance. Bill served on the board of trustees of the Salisbury School and was active on many of that school’s committees, for which he received the Salisbury Medal. He and Francoise were active members and lectors at the Church of Saint Mary and Saint John in Chappaqua.Bill is survived by his son Courtney, and his wife, Caroline; his son, Peter; three grandchildren, Hugh, William and Ione; and his brother, Raymond of Simsbury. Calling hours are April 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville, N.Y. The funeral will be April 2 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Saint Mary and Saint John. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to The Green Mountain Club, 4711 Waterbury-Stowe Road, Waterbury Center, VT 05677. The Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville has charge of the arrangements.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
