Winsted Elks invite Laurel ladies to tea

WINSTED — Members of the Laurel City Commission joined volunteers from the Winsted Elks Lodge in kicking off the 77th annual Laurel Festival season Sunday, April 3, at the Elks Lodge on High Street.Commission Chairman Tracie Colabella said this year’s Laurel Tea was the perfect way to get young ladies involved in this year’s pageant, parade and scholarship program, which takes place during the second weekend in June.“We had a blast,” Colabella said of Sunday’s event, which drew 18 interested young ladies. “Commission members provided the food and the Elks volunteered to serve. They helped us with setup and takedown, and they gave us the hall for the day.”Colabella said commission members, parents and contestants were impressed with the decor at the lodge, which was transformed into a formal dining room with white linens, flowers and ornate table settings.Commission Co-chairman Michele Pellegato organized a PowerPoint presentation about the Laurel Festival for prospective candidates, who were served tea by Elks Exalted Ruler Tom Wright and numerous past leaders of the club. “It was wonderful,” Colabella said.Elks Past Exalted Ruler Debbie Angell said the Laurel Tea was “absolutely magnificent” and Elks volunteers were eager to help out. “I was so pleased that the Elks were able to open their doors to help these girls out,” she said.The Laurel City Commission is aiming to have at least 20 candidates in this year’s Laurel Festival, and girls from local high schools are eligible to sign up through May 2.Upcoming events include an April 20 Winsted Laurel Festival Night at Chili’s in Avon, where the restaurant will donate 10 percent of eligible proceeds to the Laurel City Commission. Anyone who wants a flier to get in on the deal can pick one up at The Winsted Journal’s office, 396 Main St.On Saturday, May 14, this year’s candidates will take part in a new event — the Laurel Festival Car Wash, in which contestants will personally wash cars for donations to the program. The car wash will be at the Winsted Area Ambulance Association ambulance barn at the corner of Main and Lake streets. The rain date is Sunday, May 15.The Laurel Festival itself runs Friday through Sunday, June 10, 11 and 12.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
