Winsted Youth Soccer: Get your kicks Aug. 26

WINSTED — Coinciding with the start of the new school year, the Winsted Youth Soccer Association will host the town’s 2010 Soccer Kickoff Thursday, Aug. 26, 6 p.m., at Walker Field. The fall league is open to  students in kindergarten through grade five.

Volunteer organizer Pete Cianciolo said late registrations have been discouraged this year and that the cutoff date was Aug. 1. For those students who registered late, a $20 late fee applies and those players may not be placed on a team during the kickoff event.

“We generally want to get applications in early enough so we can organize teams,†Cianciolo said. “The program has grown this year in terms of travel teams, from two to four.â€

In kindergarten to second grade, the teams are co-ed, Cianciolo noted, and grades three through five offer boys and girls teams. For grades six through eight, the teams move back to co-ed play.

The season begins Sept. 11, the first Saturday after Labor Day. A full schedule of games will be released after teams are finalized.

“We’ll probably have four kindergarten teams and four or five first- and second-grade teams,†Cianciolo said. “For grades three, four and five, we’re still trying to figure out the numbers. Generally the program has about 300 kids per year.â€

For players who have already registered at events held in July, teams will be assigned at the kickoff and a group photo will be taken of all players on the bleachers at Walker Field.

The season schedule has been simplified this year, with boys in grades three through five playing on Mondays and Wednesdays; and girls in grades three through five playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Co-ed grades six through eight play on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and co-ed kindergarten through second grade plays on Saturdays. Fridays will be reserved for occasional make-up games.

Registration this year is $45 per child, with a maximum of $75 per family. With the $20 late fee, the fees are $65 and $95.

At the Aug. 26 soccer kickoff, children who have been placed on teams will join their squads, while parent volunteers keep things organized.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,†Cianciolo noted. “And if people have leftover spikes, cleats and shin guards, we can use them.†Knee pads and goalie gloves are also useful.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
