You don't have to be an expert to be a Master

LAKEVILLE — For the swimmer who is focused on improving technique and speed, there is the New Wave Masters program, run by U.S. Masters Swimming coach Rick Vizzari. The program, which was started four years ago, is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has any swimming ability at all, from beginner to advanced. Sessions are held in the pool at The Hotchkiss School on Sunday afternoons. The last session was Dec. 19 for 2010; the new season begins Jan. 9.

The swimmers who join the New Wave Masters also join U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS), which operates through localized clubs that help both competitive and noncompetitive swimmers keep fit.

Many of the swimmers in the Northwest Corner’s New Wave Masters club come because they are training to compete in triathlons. Others simply want to be able to swim faster and more efficiently.

On Sunday, Dec. 12, Vizzari offered a freestyle stroke clinic that was open not only to Masters swimmers but also to recreational swimmers who take part in the Salisbury and Sharon recreational swims during the week at Hotchkiss.

Vizzari was joined at the clinic by Bob Keiter, a former USMS coach and competitive swimmer, and Becky Bryant, who is a Hartford area marathon and triathlon coach.

Vizzari’s wife, Sue, stood by with a video camera, recording each swimmer individually. The videos were later played back to each swimmer during a meeting with one of the three coaches, so they could see from an outsider’s point of view what their stroke looks like.

“It really helps for the swimmers to be able to see what they’re doing,†she said.

The videotaping technique is also used during the regular New Wave Masters sessions. Swimmers are recorded once at the beginning of the season, and once again mid-season, so they are able to track their progress.

The New Wave Masters program starts its next season on Jan. 9 and will meet every Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hotchkiss. It is open to all swimmers over the age of 18, whether they are casual swimmers or are interested in competing. There will be 11 sessions plus another clinic in the spring ($145 for the season). Each session incorporates drills, timed sets and a variety of workouts at different levels of difficulty and intensity.

All swimmers must join USMS for $42 for the year, which provides insurance and other benefits; for information on the 2011 membership fees, go online to usms.org.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
