Zach Pruner honored at high school ceremony

PINE PLAINS — Members from the Pine Plains Central School District community gathered at the Stissing Mountain Middle/High School football field, Friday, Sept. 5, for a dedication ceremony in Zach Pruner’s memory.Zach, a former football player for the school, died in a car accident along with classmate Gian Stagnaro in August 2013. The ceremony had two purposes: dedicating a light pole on the field in Zach’s honor and presenting the team with a $34,000 check representing funds raised through a Zach Dalton Pruner Memorial Fund. The $34,000 has already been used by the district to purchase equipment for the football program including new home and away uniforms (60 total), 12 helmets, 12 shoulder pads, practice obstacles, four headsets for the coaches and more. The fund also established a perpetuity scholarship program in Zach’s name for graduating seniors continuing onto higher education.Athletic Director Jeremy Weber opened the ceremony and introduced Pine Plains Bombers Coach Tom Povall.“Now a lot of people are probably wondering why we picked a light pole for Zach Pruner,” Povall said to the audience. “Zach was a little bit different — he had an off-beat sense of humor, so we though this would honor him really great.”Povall shared a story from a summer practice where Zach missed a tackle and collided with the pole. According to the coach, the player stood up and rubbed his forehead. When asked what was the matter, Zach replied, “I think I hurt my shoulder.”“Zach’s somebody we’re going to miss. He was only with us for a little while, but he’s going to remain in our hearts forever,” Povall said.Eduard van der Geest, a friend of Zach’s mother, Sue Treacy, who established the fund with his wife, Selina, spoke next.“Zach was very close to us, we knew him pretty much half his life,” van der Geest said. “He made a real impression on us and young Zach was a funny kid as well as sincere. He was inventive, enterprising, he was also a 16-year-old at the wrong place at the wrong time.”Van der Geest explained that when he heard about the news, he and Selina tried to think of ways they could help.“After discussing with Sue our idea to start a fund in Zach’s name, she mentioned his love for football and particularly the team of the Pine Plains Bombers,” he said. “Sue felt that he would like them to be the recipients of money that we raise with this fund, so many friends of ours were very touched by this tragic story and have given very generously in Zach’s memory.“If any good can come out of this — something so tragic — maybe this will help a little bit,” van der Geest added.Treacy then presented the check to Coach Povall.
