2014 Election Results - The Millerton News Coverage Area

NEW YORK STATE — The following are the unofficial results for the 2014 election pertaining to the Harlem Valley, as accessed via New York State and Dutchess County boards of elections on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at noon.

As per the New York State Board of Elections Election Night Reporting Page (www.nyenr.elections.state.ny.us), official results are published after a complete recanvass of all votes cast and the canvass of all absentee ballots, usually within 25 days of the election.

Tallies below may not reflect total votes if certain counties have not yet submitted results to the State Board.

Governor

Incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo and running mate Kathy Hochul won 52.86 percent of the ballot statewide with 1,845,934 votes total. Republican challengers Rob Astorino and Chris Moss received 39.14 percent of the ballot with 1,366,755 votes total.

U.S. Congress, 19th District

Incumbent Republican Chris Gibson won 62.86 percent of the ballot district-wide with 112,293 votes total. Democratic challenger Sean Eldridge received 34.13 percent of the ballot with 60,982 votes total.

State Assembly, 106th District

Incumbent Democrat Didi Barrett stated in a release after polls closed on Election Night, “I am very pleased that I will continue to represent the people of the 106th Assembly District.”

A post on Republican challenger Michael Kelsey’s Facebook page the same night stated, “With all results appearing to be in, I am down by 79 votes. This race will be decided by absentee ballots.”

However, the unofficial results report Kelsey winning 48.1 percent of the ballot with 12,081 votes and Barrett receiving 47.60 percent of the ballot with 11,955 votes.

State Senate, 41st District

Republican challenger Sue Serino won 51.11 percent of the ballot with 40,473 votes. Incumbent Democrat Terry Gipson received 46.39 percent of the ballot with 36,732 votes.

Amenia Assessor

Unopposed Republican Wayne Euvrard won 97.79 percent of the ballot with 574 votes. The elective assessor position will remain as the town’s Proposition 5 was voted down (see Amenia propositions below).

Millbrook Board of Trustees, two seats

Incumbent Republican Joseph Spagnola Jr. won 41.62 percent of the ballot with 318 votes. Democrat Timothy Collopy won 30.1 percent of the ballot with 230 votes. Republican Rodney Brown received 27.88 percent of the ballot with 213 votes.

Millbrook Board of Trustees, unexpired term

Information on write-in candidate results is currently under review by the Dutchess County Board of Elections.

Pine Plains Highway Superintendent

Unopposed incumbent Republican and Democrat Heather Wilson won 99.18 percent of the ballot with 608 votes.

Washington Highway Superintendent

Unopposed incumbent Republican Michael Llanes won 99.5 percent of the ballot with 803 votes.

State Propositions

The three statewide propositions — “Redistricting Procedure,” “Electronic Distribution of Legislative Bills” and “Smart Schools Bond Act” — were all voted in favor of by majority.

Amenia Propositions

Proposition 4 to increase funding to the Amenia Free Library by $33,000 to the sum of $95,000 annually was voted for by 59.64 percent of the ballot with 557 votes. There were 377 votes against the referendum.

Proposition 5 to establish an appointive assessor position was voted down by 70.78 percent of the ballot with 659 votes. There were 272 votes in favor of the initiative.

North East Propositions

Proposition 4 to extend the supervisor term from two to four years was voted for by 69.55 percent of the ballot with 402 votes. There were 176 votes against the measure.

Proposition 5 to extend the town clerk term from two to four years was voted for by 74.22 percent of the ballot with 429 votes. There were 149 votes against the measure.

MILLERTON — Robert Donald “Bob” Stevens, 63, a lifelong area resident died unexpectedly on Monday evening, March 30, 2026, at his home in Millerton, New York. Bob had a 40-year career with the Town of North East Highway Department where he currently served as the Town of North East Highway Superintendent for nearly two decades. One of Bob’s proudest accomplishments was seeing the completion of the new Town of North East Highway Department Facility on Route 22 in Millerton.

Born Dec. 20, 1962, in Sharon, he was the son of the late Kenneth W. and Roberta K. (Briggs) Stevens. Bob was a 1981 graduate ofWebutuck High School in Amenia, he also attended BOCES Technical School in Salt Point, New York, while enrolled at Webutuck. Bob served his community for many years as an active member of the Millerton Fire Company and was a longtime member of the New York State Association of Town Superintendents of Highways, Inc., where he always enjoyed attending highway training school in Lake Placid. Bob really enjoyed traversing the local roadways in Millerton in his iconic orange pick-up truck, and could often be seen at all hours of the day and night making sure that the main roads and side roads were in the best possible condition for his friends and neighbors. Bob loved the Town of North East and he will be dearly missed by those he served throughout his decades long career. In his spare time, he enjoyed texting with his son Robert, time on the Hudson River and rebuilding engines for many friends in his younger years.

CANAAN — Lucille A. Mikesell passed away peacefully on April 3 with family at her home in Canaan Valley, Connecticut. She was 106.

Born on Sept. 5, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she was the daughter of William Harvey Cohea, of Mason, Illinois, and Lillian Amanda Williams of Morley, Iowa. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1937, and married her husband, Ralph J. Mikesell in 1938.

John Carter, who served as rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury from 1999 until his retirement in 2014, launched the first iteration of the nonprofit Vecinos Seguros 1 (Safe Neighbors) in 2017 by introducing a misa, a Spanish-language worship service, at Trinity Lime Rock Episcopal Church.

In December 2024, amid concerns over a renewed federal crackdown on immigrants, a group of volunteers revived the program as Vecinos Seguros 2 (VS2). According to its 2025 annual report, the initiative “created a network of trusted allies to help those who may be targeted by immigration enforcement agents,” taking a low-key approach that prioritizes in-person connections.

EAST CANAAN — Anthony Louis Veronesi , 84, of 216 Rocky Mountain Way in Arden, NC formerly of East Canaan, died March 26, 2026 at the Solace Center in Ashville, NC.Anthony was born December 14, 1941 in North Canaan, CT son of the late Claudio Serene and Genevieve Adeline (Riva) Veronesi.

Following graduation from Housatonic Valley High School in Falls Village, Anthony worked at the former Pfizer Company in Canaan for a short time before entering the US Air Force.He served for four years in active duty rising to the rank of Sergeant.He was released from active duty on April 9, 1968.After leaving the Air Force,Anthony worked at the Becton Dickinson Company in Canaan.He was transferred to North Carolina and retired from BD.Anthony then began his career for the United States Postal Service, for many years as a mail handler, before his retirement from the Postal Service.
