30th District GOP hosts candidates at breakfast gathering

KENT — The 30th District Republicans sponsored a breakfast on June 23 at the Fife ’n Drum restaurant. The purpose of the gathering was to introduce candidates for the Republican nomination for the 5th U.S. Congressional District election in 2012. Hartford attorney Brian Hill, a candidate for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2012, also attended.Four candidates for the Republican nomination for the Connecticut U.S. Fifth Congressional District were at the breakfast: Justine Bernier, a political activist from Plainville; Michael Clark, a former FBI agent and now a businessman in Farmington; and Lisa Wilson-Foley, a business woman from Simsbury. Mark Greenberg, a businessman from Litchfield, was unable to attend and sent a representative in his place.After an introduction by John Morris, co-chair of the 30th District Republicans, state Sen. Andrew Roraback(R-30) addressed the group and outlined his feelings about the state government’s handling of the current budget deficit. The senator also explained how a disabled veteran from Torrington asked him why senior citizens get into state parks free of charge, but disabled veterans have to pay. Roraback said he spoke with state officials about this situation and now disabled veterans can go to state parks without paying entrance fees.Jacie Falkowski, communications director for the state Democratic Party, attended the breakfast and was introduced by John Morris. When candidate Clark gave his talk to the group, he told Falkowski he had a voter registration form in his car and would be happy to show her how to change parties, to a round of applause and laughter.Each candidate gave a short talking about themselves, explaining their credentials and asking for support.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
