Nallely Ayala to study abroad

pine plains — SUNY Oneonta senior Nallely Ayala of Pine Plains is spending the spring semester in Barcelona, Spain, where she will complete an internship at the Study Centre for Peace J.M. Delas.

Ayala, a dual major in International Studies and Spanish, is the first SUNY Oneonta student to pursue an internship through the college’s new international internship program, which offers opportunities in 12 major cities around the world in partnership with the Academic Internship Council and Connect-123.

During her internship, Ayala will work on research and documentation related to disarmament, arms trade, armed conflict and culture of peace topics. She will also work on campaigns related to military spending and investments in weapons and drones.

Ayala was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, and came to the United States during her teenage years. A graduate of Stissing Mountain Middle/High School, she enrolled at SUNY Oneonta through the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and Educational Opportunity Program. In addition to serving as a resident advisor for more than two years, she has been an active member of the college’s Multicultural Student Council,  Hispanic Organization for Learning Advancement (HOLA) club and the Zombie Defense Corps.

copake — Jacob Simmons was recently honored by acceptance in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

He was chosen by a campus nominating committee for this honor based upon academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and continued potential for success.

Simmons is studying in the engineering science academic program at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y.

Hitchen inducted into chapter

Ancram — Matthew Hitchen was inducted into SUNY Oneonta’s Beta Eta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon national honor society during a ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 5

SUNY Oneonta’s Beta Eta Chapter members are full-time Educational Opportunity Program (EPOP) and College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) students who have held a cumulative grade-pint average of 3.0 or higher for at least two consecutive semesters.

A graduate of Taconic Hills Central High School, Hitchen is majoring in political science at SUNY Oneonta.

Falls Village Board of Finance to hold public hearing on proposed spending May 21

FALLS VILLAGE — The Board of Finance will hold a public hearing on the proposed spending plans for 2025-26 Wednesday, May 21, 6:30 p.m. at the Emergency Services Center and on Zoom.

First Selectman Dave Barger will present the municipal plan and Board of Education chair Pat Mechare will handle the plan for the Lee H. Kellogg School.

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic varsity baseball and softball teams hosted Mountaineers of years past for alumni games Saturday, May 17.

Grads ranged from the Class of 1988 to the Class of 2024. Alumni teams won both games, 17-3 in baseball and 7-4 in softball.

Health dept. clears BD to reopen facility after hazmat scare
Cones and warning signs remain present at Grace Way in North Canaan Saturday, May 17, but as of 3 p.m. the facility was cleared to resume normal operations.

Following two days of closure due to a hazmat incident, the BD facility in North Canaan was cleared to resume normal operations on Saturday, May 17.

North Canaan First Selectman Brian Ohler provided an update at 3 p.m. stating day two culture tests of the substance that was sent to BD showed "no growth." Lab tests yesterday were negative for Anthrax, Burkholderia Species, Plague, Tularemia, Smallpox and Ricin.
