Amenia’s Drug World changes ownership

AMENIA— Customers looking for a local pharmacy and drug store to meet their medication and personal care needs can rest assured that the sale of Drug World won’t mean those needs go unanswered. Store manager Staci Robinson said as much when she assured the community that the only thing that’s changing is the name, and the ownership.

But customers might also notice that prices have changed, for the better. Robinson said most items can be had for 10 to 20 percent less than before, thanks to new owner Benzer Pharmacy, out of Tampa, Fla. Benzer Pharmacy has more than 50 stores, stretching across the U.S.

Family-owned Drug World had three locations previously: Amenia, Cold Spring and Croton. The Amenia store opened in 2005. According to Robinson, that location became inconvenient for Drug World owner Heidi Snyder.

“We are so far from her other locations,” said Robinson. “So she sold it.”

Snyder kept her other two New York stores and remains headquartered out of Cold Spring.

The Drug World sale took place on April 30, and customers have been slowly informed of the changeover. Robinson said there’s been little confusion, especially since all of the four part-time and four full-time employees, including pharmacist Donald Goldberg, have remained on staff.

“People seem to be OK with the changes as long as everybody who was here is still here and as long as they can still get their prescriptions,” said Robinson.

Cashier Cassie Bailey said some of her customers wanted to make sure they could still buy their other products at the pharmacy as well. Bailey assured them that most of the store’s stock will remain the same.

“When they come in, I direct them to what they need,” she said, adding that hasn’t changed. “I do know  that the new owners, they’re updating the registers and bringing in a new computer system. We also have a new wholesaler, so prices and products are going to be cheaper.”

Bailey said she’s encouraged by the changes.

“The new owner’s goal is to make it more pharmacy-based,” she added. “They hopefully want to bring in more business than what the store used to have. They want to try to make it more efficient.”

Bailey continued that she, and her coworkers, will do their best to make the transition a smooth one.

“My goal is really just for customers to know the store is changing. Every week we have customers coming in and they think we’re closing,” she said. “In a town so small it’s easy for people to think we’re going out of business, but we’re not. It’s actually a positive change that’s coming, they just have to give it a chance. The goal is that people in this area get a better business than they did before. That’s my concern as someone who works there.”

The soon-to-be-renamed Benzer Pharmacy hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m., with the pharmacy open till noon; and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no pharmacy hours.

Robinson said that soon, she thinks, those hours will be extended. For more information, call the pharmacy at 845-373-8000.
