Anthony M. 'Brud' Pulver

PINE PLAINS —Anthony M. “Brud†Pulver, 80, passed away on Aug. 26, 2008, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.

On Feb. 7, 1959, in Millerton, he married Eleanor (Yakubowski) Pulver.   She survives him at home.

He was born Oct. 18, 1927, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of the late May (Miller) and Ralph W. Pulver Sr.

Brud was owner and operator of A. Pulver Trucking in Pine  Plains.

He was a charter member and past president of the Pine Plains Lions Club.  He was a commissioner of the Pine Plains Hose Company for 40 years and past member for more than 60 years.  He was on the FFA (Future Farmers of America) advisory board for more than 30 years. He was past treasurer of the Dutchess County Farm Bureau and member of the American Farm Bureau. He was on the board of directors for the Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Company and he was on the Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester Farmer’s Agency Board.

Brud loved the town of Pine Plains dearly.  The people of Pine Plains affectionately referred to him as the “mayor of Pine Plains.â€

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Tonya Pulver of Pine Plains; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Denis Larkin of New Milford, Conn.; a sister, Phyllis Ronner of Red Hook; four grandchildren, Claire Pulver and Patrick, Brian and Tara Larkin.

 Brud was predeceased by a brother, Ralph W. Pulver Jr.

The Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains has charge of the arrangements.

A funeral service was held Aug.30 from the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, the Rev. Carol Miller officiating. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, from St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Pine Plains. the Rev. William A. White officiating.

Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
