The art of cooking in a weekend retreat

CORNWALL — For some people, there is little difference between the creative pursuits of art and cooking. Where the two meet and overlap will be explored during a weekend at the Cornwall Inn next month.Winsted artist and teacher Gay Schempp will team up with the inn’s chef, Rachel Crane, to offer a three-day workshop April 18 to 20.The Epicurious Artist Workshop Retreat will include country lodging, gourmet meals, art instruction and chef’s secrets, as well as a chance to explore the area. Participants will create and illustrate their own cookbooks in a variety of media. Stacey Marcin, who owns and runs the inn with her husband, Mark Hampson, said they have been wanting to hold art workshops for years, but just never got around to organizing one. Upon meeting Schempp at a party, the idea came together.Schempp has organized art workshops in Japan, Greece and Italy, and offers private and group lessons in her Winsted studio. Crane trained at the New York Restaurant School in Manhattan. She worked in upscale restaurants and catering before moving to Cornwall in 2010.
