Augusta Lee Wheeler

ANCRAMDALE — Augusta Lee Wheeler, 77, a lifelong area resident, died Jan. 25, 2015, at Yale New Haven Hospital. 

Mrs. Wheeler worked in the housekeeping department at The Hotchkiss School for 34 years before retiring in 2000.

Born July 6, 1937, in Ancram, she was the daughter of the late Alice (Frenzel) and Niels Hoyt. She attended Taconic Hills High School. 

On March 11, 1956, in Millerton, she married Gerald Wheeler. Together they shared over 59 years of marriage. Mr. Wheeler survives at home.

Mrs. Wheeler loved to paint ceramics in her spare time and was an avid gardener with a vast array of many different houseplants and flowers that she cared for.  

She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her, especially her loving husband and devoted sons.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Richard Wheeler of South Africa and John Wheeler and his wife, Dana, of Millerton; her grandchildren, Kaye, Sean, Timothy, Nicole and Adam Wheeler; four great-grandchildren; seven brothers; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Wheeler was predeceased by a son, Gerald Wheeler; and a grandson, Andrew Wheeler.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home in Millerton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Irondale Cemetery in  Millerton.

NORTH CANAAN — A recount held Monday, Nov. 10, at Town Hall confirmed Democrat Jesse Bunce’s narrow victory over incumbent First Selectman Brian Ohler (R) in one of the tightest races in town history.

“A difference of two votes,” said recount moderator Rosemary Keilty after completing the recanvass, which finalized the tally at 572 votes for Bunce and 570 for Ohler.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
